Pickens County Elementary Social Studies Fair
There were 18 participants in this year's Pickens County Elementary Schools' Social Studies Fair. The fair was held on Thursday, October 13th. Highest Yearly Attendance
Congratulation to Harmony Elementary School for having the highest yearly ADA 96.49% for the 2010-2011 school year. Way to go Harmony!!!!

2011 Retirees
Superintendent Ben Arp and Chair Lowe recognized the 2010-2011 retirees and presented them with a plaque. Retirees included Saralynn DeMarcus, Norma Pittman, Kathy Pickering, Sharon Rasco, John White, Steve Sewell, Debbie Grimes, Lillian Noland, Betty Childers, Betty Silvers, Paula Adams, Joy Fowler, Nora Bunch, Wanda Ray, Melinda Edwards.

Peyton Heath
Pickens County Middle School Principal Chris LeMieux recognized Peyton heath for her outstanding science accomplishments this year. Peyton won the district level science fair, and she finished 3rd in the state science fair. This is the second consecutive year that Peyton has won the science fair at the district level and placed at the state level.

FCCLA
CTAE Director Shannon Gable recognized Kayla Bobo, Katelyn Jones, and Kayla Collis for qualifying for National Leadership Conference. FCCLA Advisor is Bonnie Risinger. Katie McDonald was also recognized as a FCCLA officer for next year.

Chris Wallace and Ali Rattazzi
Gable recognized Ali Rattazzi for placing 7th overall at State Golf Tournament. She had qualified for state by tying for low medalist at Region 7AAA Tournament.

Pickens County Reading Council
Pickens County Reading Council President Sandy Greene recognized the Readers of the Year. These readers were presented certificates and gift certificates to Books a Million. The Readers of the Year are as follows: Harmony Elementary 2nd grader Cole Sievert, Jasper Elementary 4th grader John Hendricks, Jasper Middle 8th grader Natalie McFarland, and Pickens High 11th grader Cory Johnson. John Hendricks was also the Georgia Reading Association Reader of the Year for 2010.

JMS 8th grader Emily Hostetler was recognized for the Junior National Livestock Show Student Spotlight. Only three FFA members and three 4-H members from across the state are chosen each year. Emily is the first middle school student to ever receive this honor through Georgia FFA.

The JMS FFA Officer Team was invited to participate in the activities at the capitol for the kickoff celebration for Agriculture in Georgia Week. They visited with senators, representatives, and the Commissioner of Agriculture, Gary Black. The officer team also were privileged to get to hear Georgia Governor Nathan Deal speak about his child hood days in the FFA and how he is where he is today because of it.

FFA
Jasper Middle School Principal Neil Howell recognized JMS FFA. They were named Area Winner for Chapter Achievement in North Georgia. This award is based on the student activities in the chapter to help student, chapter and community development. The FFA advisor is Todd Dobson.

Williams recognized Heather Klein for participating in the state-level interviews for the Governor’s Honors Program and was selected as one of 16 students from across Georgia who will participate in GHP in the area of Engineering and Technolo0gy. Heather will be attending the four week program at Valdosta State University this summer. PHS has been represented five of the last six years at the GHP.

TSA
Gable recognized Heather Klein and Kelah Hendon were recognized for achieving the silver level achievement award and qualified for the gold level at the national conference. Harrison Kreafle, Fernando Neto and Jacob Godfrey placed 1st in the state in technology Bowl; Brandon McClain and Harrison Kreafle place 2nd in the State in Video Game Design; Griff Montgomery and Heather Klein placed 3rd in the State in Digital Video Editing. Each of these students qualified for the national conference in Dallas, TX. The advisor is Angela Quarles.

FBLA
Gable recognized Meagan Smith who placed 1st in the state in the Healthcare Administration competition. Tyler Weaver finished 4th in the state in the Personal Finance competition. Both students will advance to the National Leadership Conference in Orlando, FL June 27-July 1. FBLA advisors are Carissa Parker and Chris Wallace.

Williams recognized PHS CTAE Director Shannon Gable. Gable recognized Brittany Carroll who placed 1st at the Region I Skills USA Competition in the job interview competition which qualified her to go to state. She placed 3rd in State competition. Her advisor is Susan Taylor. Carroll was unable to attend.

PHS Boys Basketball Team
Pickens High School Principal Chris Williams recognized PHS Boys basketball team for their record of 19-10. They won the ETC tournament for the third straight year. The team finished 3rd in Region 7 AAA sub region (A). The team allowed only 47.4 points per game for the season. (Fewest ever) This is the fifth time in school history that the boys have earned a trip to state and the first time in 10 years.

PHS Girls Basketball Team
Pickens High School Principal Chris Williams recognized the PHS Girls basketball team for their overall record of 16-12 and they tied for second in Region 7 AAA sub region (A) and progressed to the state tournament for the first time in ten years. This team was coached by head Coach Kevin Jacobs and Assistant Coach Allison Loggins.

PCMS 7th Grade Basketball
Pickens County Middle School Assistant Principal Nathan Buhl recognized the seventh grade boy’s basketball team coached by Tony Weaver. These boys were recognized for winning first place in the North Georgia Mountain League. Also, they were North Georgia Mountain League tournament champs.

Valedictorian Salutatorian
Pickens High School Principal Chris Williams recognized Michael Land as the Star Student and Valedictorian for the Class of 2011 and Jessica Bell as the Salutatorian.

Pickens High School Principal Chris Williams recognized Michael Land for placing first in Math at the State Beta Convention and also recognized Jessica Bell for placing first in the Beta Quiz Bowl at the State Beta Convention.

PHS Academic Team
Pickens High School Principal Chris Williams recognized Academic Team Advisors Debra Schlenke and Seana Thompson. They recognized and presented certificates of achievement to the PHS Academic Team who received fourth place at state competition.

PHS Reading Bowl Team
Pickens High School Principal Chris Williams recognized PHS Media Specialist Sharon Rasco. They recognized and presented certificates of achievement to the PHS Reading Bowl Team who received second place out of six high schools. Advisors were Sharon Rasco and Corey Pittman.

PHS Band
Pickens High School Principal Chris Williams recognized Band Director Steven Watson. They recognized and presented certificates of achievement to the 2011 9th District Honor Band Members and to the All State Band Members.

Energy
Supervisor of Operations Lloyd Shaddix recognized Board Member Ervin Easterwood, Harmony Elementary School Sherry Mullins, Maintenance Director Randall Fouts, and CDH Architect Melissa Cantrell for helping to make Harmony Elementary School conserve energy. The US Environmental Protection Agency awarded HES with an Energy Star Award Plaque. Shaddix had a display of an old 400 watt halogen bulb verses a more efficient 216 watt halogen bulb. He proved the shorter time for it to come on and much better lighting while saving on energy and price.

PCMS All State Band
Pickens County Middle School Principal Chris LeMieux recognized the PCMS Band Director Kevin Boyle and Boyle recognized the PCMS 2010-2011 All District and All State Band members. Boyle presented plaques to the band members.

PCMS Spelling Bee Winners
LeMieux recognized the two spelling bee winners from PCMS Noah Hoffbauer and Kyle Hagedorn. Hagedorn will move on to compete at the district level at Mabry Middle School in Cobb County.

TES Reading Bowl

Congratulations to the Tate Elementary Reading Bowl Team who finished in first place among the thirteen elementary teams in the regional Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl! Team members are Maddie Adams, Hannah Ballard, Amberly Brooks, Dalton Crowe, Abby Freeman, Rachel Jacobs, Andrea Miletello,and Olivia Moore. Many thanks to Tracy Holt and Nancy Teague for their dedication and commitment to coaching this team. The team will compete in the divisional competition in Morrow on Saturday, February 26th.

Arp read a letter aloud from the (GA DOE) Georgia Department of Education where the Pickens County School System was recognized for meeting one or more of the Georgia performance goals for students with disabilities. Arp presented Special Educational Director George Smalley with a certificate from the GA DOE.
