New School Nutrition Meal Prices for 2011-2012
When the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 passed through the United States Congress, it mandated for the first time ever, that school districts like ours across the country raise prices for students who pay full price for lunch.  This requirement does not affect students who are eligible for free and reduced-price lunches. A provision in this Act (Section 205) requires Local Education Associations to start gradually increasing the price of a full paid student meal to match the reimbursement rate received for a free student meal. These changes should help us continue to make sure our kids are well-nourished and ready to learn.
In an attempt to meet these mandated price increases and to minimize the impact on the families in our community, lunch prices will be increased by $0.05 for the 2011 - 2012 school year.  Breakfast prices will not change for the 2011 – 2012 school year.

The mission of the Pickens County School Nutrition Program is to be a part of the education process by providing students with nutritious meals and nutrition education experiences that promote healthy children who are ready to learn.

Benefits to Children

The School Nutrition Program provides a nutritious breakfast and lunch for school children every day. Free or reduced-price meals are available to students whose families meet qualifying economic guidelines. The program provides meals that meet at least two-thirds of the recommended daily dietary allowances. Meal choices offered each day include: protein rich entrees, plenty of fruit and vegetable selections, whole-grain or enriched breads and cereals and calcium rich milk.

Operations

The Pickens County School Nutrition Program is operated in accordance with the regulations of the National School Lunch Act, the regulations of the State Board of Education and the Pickens County Board of Education.

Sources of funding for the School Nutrition Program include student and adult income, State funds, Federal reimbursement for student meals based on income eligibility and USDA donated commodity foods.
