Mike Ballew, Superintendent


Mike Ballew has lived in north Georgia for 59 years. He grew up in Epworth Georgia, located in Fannin County. He graduated from West Fannin High School in 1968. He also started his professional teaching career in Fannin County in 1974.

Mike graduated from Truett McConnell College in Cleveland, Georgia in 1970 where he received an associate degree in business. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1972 with a degree in business. Mike then accepted employment with Chesebrough-Ponds Corporation where he enjoyed two successful years in sales before he decided he wanted to teach and coach.

Mike returned to school to become certified in education so he could teach. He started his teaching career at Blue Ridge Elementary School as an eighth grade math teacher. For the next nine years, Mike taught and coached at West Fannin Jr. High. At that time he was offered the position of Principal at Epworth Elementary School. He remained in this position for five years. During his tenure as principal at Epworth Elementary, Mike added Master degrees in Education and in Administration and Supervision. Mike also obtained a Specialist degree in Leadership from the University of Georgia in 1987.

Mike was then asked to implement the middle school concept for Fannin County. After implementation, Mike remained Principal four years at the middle school level. Mike’s next assignment was Associate Superintendent in the central office dealing with personnel and operations. He remained in this position for two years.

Mike came to Pickens County in 1997 as a classroom teacher. He remained in the classroom at Pickens County Middle School for three years before serving as Transportation Director, Personnel Director, Assistant Superintendent, and Director of Special Projects until being named to his current position in September 2005. He has been in the Pickens County School System for 12 years.

Mike has been married to his wife Sherri, now a retired teacher, for 30 years. They have two children. Sarah is a teacher and Michael will begin teaching in the fall of 2009. He enjoys family time and sports, especially golf. Mike is looking forward to his continued working relationship with everyone in Pickens County.
